Journal policies

Aims and scope: DuJAL publishes research on (second) language use, learning, teaching and policy. It particularly values both theoretically and practically driven research that is of societal relevance. While the journal aims to be the primary venue for all applied linguistic research that is of special relevance to Dutch-speaking contexts in the Netherlands and Belgium and beyond, it also welcomes contributions that are of interest to the broader, international applied linguistics community.

Submission types: DuJAL mostly publishes full-fledged papers that generally present novel data on research questions or hypotheses that are embedded in an extensive theoretical framework; however, shorter manuscripts (e.g., research notes) are also welcome. An article may also consist of a thorough review of the literature (e.g. a systematic review or meta-analysis), which summarizes existing work and generates avenues for future research. DuJAL also particularly encourages submissions that contain replications.
Shorter papers which aim to advance new ideas or perspectives in theory or methodology, or to provide novel extensions or replications of previously published studies are also welcome.

Submission: Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal’s online submission and manuscript tracking site. Carefully review our manuscript guidelines before submtting.

Languages: Contributions must be in Dutch or English. English spelling should be either American English or British English and should be consistent throughout the paper. Prior to submission, papers are expected to have been checked on spelling, grammar, and word use. Authors may provide an additional abstract in any language if the study is relevant for speakers of that language.

Number of words: Research articles can be of any length up to 7000 words. This does not include references and abstracts. More words may be allowed in exceptional cases, but authors should always seek permission prior to submission.

Open access: Papers are published open access immediately under CC-BY licence, which means that your paper may be freely shared and distributed, provided that it is appropriately attributed. DuJAL does not charge Author Processing Costs (APCs); these are covered by Anéla, the Dutch Association of Applied Linguistics. However, if you have access to funds for open access publication, Anéla would greatly appreciate it if authors cover a part of the article processing costs, namely €250 excluding VAT. These contributions are used to support sustainable open access of this journal.

Open Science, transparency and pre-registration: DuJAL encourages researchers to pre-register studies when possible, and to make their materials and data FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. DuJAL supports the inclusion of research instruments and data sets upon submission, and can publish these with accepted articles. If authors do not have easy access to GDPR-compliant online data storage options such as DataVerse, the Openjournals environment can provide such storage facilities.

Research ethics: DuJAL expects authors to adhere to the Standards for good research practices (VSNU, 2018, chapter 3). DuJAL expects fair author attributions, fair treatment of research participants, honest reporting, explicit mention of funding and any potential conflict of interest when submitting the manuscript. If the contribution reports on studies that have been carried out by the authors, the data collection and storage should all be GDPR compliant, unless the research was conducted in a setting in which the GDPR does not apply.

Authorship: DuJAL requires that all those listed as authors made a substantial contribution to the article submitted and that no-one who made a substantial contribution is omitted as author (e.g. in work that is (partly) based on student graduate work, we expect these students to be included as co-authors). Authors must be human and must have full intellectual ownership of the manuscript they submit and must take full responsibility for its contents. DuJAL requires the inclusion of author contributions and acknowledgements in the published manuscript on the basis of the Contributor Role Taxonomy (CRediT) taxonomy (Brand et al. 2015). More information can be found here. Manuscripts that are submitted should be approved by all authors.

AI-based technology and authorship: All authors must be human. The use of AI-based generative technology is allowed, but only as a helping tool. The use of such technologies needs to be stipulated honestly and transparently upon acceptance in a Statement of Technology Use, and be explained in a justification section. More information about how to report the use of technologies can be found here.

Reviewing: Submissions submitted to DuJAL are subject to double-blind peer review. Each manuscript is assigned to one of the members of the editorial board. We normally seek the advice of two anonymous, knowledgeable external reviewers. Reviewers are asked to consider the following points:

    1. Are the study’s goals well motivated and based on an adequate understanding of the relevant literature?
    2. Are the data presented in the paper of sufficient quality to warrant publication? Were the methods used sufficiently rigorous and appropriate given the study’s goals?
    3. Are the study’s conclusions and implications justified given the study’s methods and results?

All submissions are reviewed internally before being sent out for external review. If submissions don’t meet DuJAL’s mission and submissions guidelines or if they are of insufficient quality, they will be rejected prior to review.

Archiving: DuJAL is part of Openjournals, which makes use of Portico archiving systems to ensure that publications are permanently archived.
